The Poet's Daughters

Her Laughter and a Star’s Light

What lies within me no man knows; her shy face shall, at a glance, sweeten bitter woes. Some trivial thing but incites her rolling, infectious laughter; enchanted tears upon my cheeks may drop and crash and shatter— under whose rain shall blossom a jolly laugh right after. No more shall I wander in the darkness of a pupil, black and hollow, for I have a shining star; a shepherd to a flock, to guide my way, to follow. My heart shall lift me from my desert depth to the thin peaks of mountain air; to steer her tongue from bitter tastes is its simple prayer. So may her bliss and innocence overflow the brim; may her cheeks stay dry, even when she is grown. For hers is the laughter and the star that shall never dim, to keep her safe lest she ever be alone.
